Alberto Arenas, 29, was shot and killed by police at his home in Downey, California, on Saturday night after officers responded to a report of a man causing a disturbance near Stewart and Gray Road. Witnesses said he had been lighting fireworks in the backyard and got into an argument with a neighbor. Police said officers tried to de-escalate before shooting him after he pointed what appeared to be a rifle at them. His father said Arenas was drinking and struggling with psychosis and schizophrenia. Police later said the rifle was an airsoft-style rifle, and the California Department of Justice took over the investigation. Arenas died at the scene.
