Cody LaFont was a 25 year old Claremont man who owned guns. After having several mental health episodes, his family took away all of his guns. On September 25, 2016, Claremont police responded to several 911 calls about the resident, Cody LaFont. When police officer Kibbe engaged LaFont, LaFont was holding a handgun by a front door. Kibbe told LaFont several times to drop his gun. LaFont then turned towards the officer which was met with three shots that killed LaFont. The officer testified that he felt threatened and feared for his life, so he fatally shot LaFont. The LaFont family is currently suing the officer for using excessive force.
