Denny Adan Gonzalez

Denny Adan Gonzalez (Georgia) was a 33-year-old Cuban man who died on April 28, 2026, at Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia, a for-profit CoreCivic-operated ICE facility approximately 120 miles southwest of Atlanta. He had been in ICE custody since January 2026, transferred from Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he had been arrested in December 2025. Staff found him unresponsive in his cell at approximately 10:25 p.m. Emergency personnel performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at 11:11 p.m. ICE listed the suspected cause of death as suicide, with the official cause still under investigation. Advocacy groups, including the Detention Watch Network, reported that Gonzalez had been held in solitary confinement before his death, which they characterized as torture. His death is the 18th reported ICE detention death in 2026 and the fourth at Stewart Detention Center since January 2025. Stewart has long been one of the most scrutinized facilities in the ICE detention system, with federal investigators and lawmakers repeatedly citing inadequate mental health care, heavy use of solitary confinement, and dangerous conditions. Gonzalez is the fourth person reported to have died by suicide inside Stewart. Project South legal and advocacy director Azadeh Shahshahani called for the facility to be shut down, stating that tragedies continue to mount there while ICE doubles down.
