Jamal Sutherland was a 31- year old diagnosed with Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder. Jamal was admitted into a behavioral health facility due to his mental health. After he attacked another patient, police were called. When he was arrested, officers were told to take him to jail instead of another secure treatment facility, according to Scott and North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey. Scott said the employees made the decision, Summey cites someone from EMS. Jamal died the next morning after two deputies at the Charleston County Detention Center repeatedly shocked him with stun guns in an attempt to forcibly remove him from his cell to appear at a bond court hearing he wasn’t legally required to attend.
