Jeffery Ely was 40 years old and lived in the Windsor area. His mind was slowly deteriorating prior to police involvement. Friends and acquaintances of Ely said they were worried about his health when he began posting on social media about “mind control” and a stranger harassing him using voices sounding similar to people he knew. Unfortunately, there was little to no mental health support or treatment in Claremont. Claremont Police responded to reports of shots fired by a group of industrial and warehouse buildings. The SWAT team arrived and exchanged gunfire with Ely who barricaded in one of the buildings. Ely was fatally shot several times. Claremont is now under pressure to invest resources into a mental health program to prevent similar scenarios.
