On the morning of March 3rd, 2023, Najee Seabrooks was shot and killed by two police officers after he called the police in seek of assistance while he was having a mental health crisis.  Najee, after being the victim to a nonfatal drive-by shooting in 2021, had dedicated himself to improving public safety in his home town and became a violence interventionist with the Paterson Healing Collective.

On the morning in question, Najee had called the police telling them that he was in distress.  His family told officers that he was acting erratically and hallucinating, and at their request, the officers would call an ambulance.  Seabrooks then barricaded himself in the bathroom, acting erratically and displaying clear signs of a mental health crisis.  At 12:35, Seabrooks allegedly “approached” one of the officers with a knife in his hand and was shot.  At 12:51, Seabrooks was pronounced dead.  No charges were filed against the officers involved with the death.
