Nigeria Struggling with Women Disability Rights

(Nigeria) Reports show that women with disabilities face higher rates of violence than women without disabilities. Despite this high risk, there has been a lack of action by stakeholders regarding these risks of abuse and barriers needed to address women with disabilities.

Kolawole Jayeoba is the Programmer Director of Advocacy for women with disability initiative. He believes current disability laws designed to protect these marginalized groups have not been enforced. The Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act sat in congressional hearings for 18 years since 2000. It wasn’t until 2018 until it has passed. Despite the passing of this law, disabilities rights in Nigeria have been a hot subject. More on this story here.
