Reforming Police Hiring Needed for Police Reform

Recently, there has been concern regarding police hiring practices. In Cleveland Ohio, there was a review of 44 files for the 148th Recruitment Class for their police force. The report showed that the background checks conducted were “superficial” and criminal background checks weren’t consistently done. The monitoring team also identified a troubling absence of full documentation of checks that were made and a lack of obvious follow-up in cases where applicants reported run-ins with the law, including police encounters involving violence.

There was an incident where Timothy Loehmann was rehired in a police role. Previously Loehmann was discharged for shooting and killing a 12-year-old while deployed. Police Reform starts with reforming police hiring. More on this story here.
