On July 28th, 2024, Victoria G. Lee, 25, was shot and killed by police at 1:28am while they were responding to a call informing them that a mental health emergency was taking place. Her brother, Chris, called police at 1:13am informing them that Victoria was having a mental health crisis and that he wanted to send her to a hospital. About seven minutes later, he called the police again, asking to cancel his previous call, which the operator said was impossible. He assured the operator that Victoria wasn’t threatening anyone. Thirteen minutes after the initial call, police arrived and spoke with Chris at the door to the apartment. At 1:28am the door was forcibly opened and Victoria took a step towards the police, holding a water bottle in one hand and an unidentified object in the other. Police yelled at her to drop the knife and then opened fire. It was announced one year later that the officer involved in the shooting would not be facing charges.
